How do I count the words in my text?

Type or paste your text into the box. The counts update as you type: words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs and lines. You do not need to press anything.

How are words and characters counted?

A word is any group of characters separated by spaces or line breaks. Characters are the letters, digits, symbols, spaces and emojis you see, so an emoji counts as one character. A sentence ends with a full stop, question mark, exclamation mark or the Hindi full stop (।).

How is reading time worked out?

Reading time assumes about 200 words a minute, and speaking time about 130 words a minute. They are estimates, because people read and speak at different speeds.

What are common character limits?

The page shows your text against some well-known limits: an Instagram caption of 2,200 characters, an Instagram bio of 150 characters, and a post of 280 characters on X for standard accounts. Platforms change their limits, so check the app before you post.
